2023 concerts

'Winter Magic - A Spellbinding Afternoon of Orchestral Music', performed on Sunday 10th December at the Performing Arts Centre. The Concert started with “Ballade in A Minor” by Samuel Coleridge-Taylor: a talented composer, born to an English mother and father from Sierra Leone, who was to die tragically young at the age of 37. He is best known for “Hiawatha’s Wedding Feast”. Samuel made three successful tours of the USA in the early 1900s and was referred to as “The African Mahler”. He was valued by luminaries of English Classical Music such as Parry, Stanford, Vaughan -Williams and Elgar. This piece was premiered at the Three Choirs Festival at the suggestion of Elgar. Amidst furious sections, a ravishing gentle melody appears several times.

The Sorcerer’s Apprentice by Paul Dukas will forever be associated with the Walt Disney animated film “Fantasia”. “Be careful what you turn on, but don’t know how to turn off” is the moral of the tale. The capacity of Bassoons to create a humorous quirky atmosphere is amply demonstrated in this piece.

Next came arrangements of music by two Titans of the American Music and musicals of the twenties and thirties. Firstly, a selection of music from “Showboat” by Jerome Kern. Famous tunes such as “Ol’ Man River” , Only Make-Believe! and “Can’t help lovin’ that man o’ mine” are featured. “Gershwin by George” is an arrangement by Jerry Brubaker which features “Strike up the Band”, “I got rhythm”, “Embraceable You”, “ an American in Paris” , “Summertime” and “Rhapsody in Blue”. Coincidentally Gershwin also died prematurely, aged 37.

Festive music had to feature at this time of year – so “Sleigh Ride” by Delius kicked off this section of the Programme. Leroy Anderson was a very well-regarded composer of light music who worked extensively with the Boston Pops Orchestra. “A Christmas Festival” contains a delightful medley of Christmas carols, hymns and tunes. It was composed in 1950 and premiered by the Orchestra that year. The concert finished with “A most Wonderful Christmas” - also full of well-known and popular Christmas tunes. An enthusiastic audience sang along with the last two items.
